OLD TOILET BLOCK MAKES WAY FOR UNIQUE DWELLING IN THE HISTORIC TOWN OF SANDWICH
Hume Planning has successfully secured planning permission for a new dwelling following the demolition of a former toilet block and sandwich shop within the conservation area, following receiving Member support at Dover’s August 2020 Planning Committee.
The positive result follows a previous refusal decision for an alternative scheme at the site back in 2019. In response to the decision and prior to the submission of the application, Hume Planning carried out extensive engagement with Historic England and the scheme architects to create a traditional pumphouse style design which utilises a sustainable brownfield site whilst being sympathetic to the conservation area and nearby heritage assets including the Sandwich Town Walls Scheduled Ancient Monument. Hume Planning also co-ordinated inputs from flood risk and arboricultural consultants to satisfactorily address these matters. The amended submission received support from the case officer, the Council’s heritage officer, Historic England as well as other key statutory consultees. Construction is expected to commence on the dwelling in Spring/Summer 2022.
